From her North Cornwall design studio, Kato creates unique pieces bearing her own quirky original designs using heat-pressed vinyl digitally cut from her hand-drawn images. Her eye for detail and bold individual style leads to Syrup and Salt; an unexpected yet beautifully relevant collection of sweatshirts, jackets, t-shirts and accessories with fun and frolic at its core.
Kato’s infectious love of design is at the heart of this independent sartorial destination that creates fresh and empowering designs to instil confidence (and happiness) in the wearer. Syrup and Salt is an independent fashion label which sprang forth from the passion and verdant imagination of Kato Harrison. This fun-loving forward-thinking clothing brand fizzes with a zest for design and a passion for fashion.
1) What is your name and where do you live?
Kato Harrison, Delabole, North Cornwall.
2) What is your favourite soulventure?
My favourite soulventure is sitting on my surfboard in the sea at Polzeath, trading waves with my kids, their friends and my friends, with the headland and the island …that unchanging view
3) What’s something that no-one would guess about you?
I dream of being a stand up comedian.
4) What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
If I could get out of bed earlier.. and if I could be a lot tidier
5) If you could be doing anything, anywhere, right now, what would it be?
I’d be sitting on the beach in Bali, after a surf with my kids and husband, with a cold Coca Cola and some weird Indonesian snack…sun kissed, salty and surfed out.
Obviously my kids; seeing them surf, and this summer seeing them rock out to Pearl Jam like hardened gig goers!!! But my husband too, he’s a special kind of human who just makes everything ok, even when things have been pretty tough.
7) Who do you most admire and why?
My mother, she’s incredible. She taught Ballet at Buckingham palace before marrying my dad..now in her late 70s she’s a carer, working full time still! She has a work ethic that is unparalleled, she’s elegant, brave, beautiful..she never stops helping people.
8) Best kiss of your life?
The first time I kissed my husband and we made the transition from good mates to perfect partners. I was surprised how good it was! Oh, and a teenage one, at a fairground, with a boy my friends didn’t approve of!
9) What is a new skill you’d like to learn (and why?)
Pattern cutting. I have lots of ideas in my head, the problem is getting them onto paper then into production.
10) Woods, mountain, city or sea?
11) If you could say one thing to lots of people, what would it be?
Adopt don’t shop. Get a dog from a shelter…don’t buy some crazy breed at some crazy price when there 1000s of dogs that need homes and will love you for it.
12) What makes you happy?
Creme eggs, sun warmed skin, time with my children, my husband’s guitar licks, shopping, dog rehoming stories on line..
13) What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Buying shoes. And creme eggs
